When it comes to technology, I am amaze. It is so fascinating to me that the technology that we are using in our daily life keep on evolving. When I started my first real job as a Front Desk Agent in a hotel during my freshman year in college, to complete one cycle of guest stay an experience of making the reservation to check-in to stay request or communication and checkout, we had to use multiple different systems. For instance, we would receive reservations from any Online Travel Agency was via fax. Then our team would have to manually input those reservations into the property management system accordingly because if we do not, we might have an overbooked for a certain room type. The process is lengthy, especially, if there is any missing information, we would have to log into the Online Travel Agency portal to locate the missing information or else we would be on the phone with their support team to get that information. Now, with the new program and technology, everything can be interfaced with the hotel property management system. NO MORE MANUAL ENTRY!! This means fewer human errors.

Over the years, I was fortunate enough to experience the changes in the system and program at the hotel I work at. I was able to set up the environment in the program, access the system back-end to create custom reports, and learn to fix certain bugs through interacting with the system support team. While doing all these things, I became more curious about the software. But I was not brave enough to step out of my comfort zone and keep on giving myself excuses like I have no time due to work to be able to take the class. Moreover, I was afraid that I am not smart enough and coding is completely different from hotel operation and management.

All of this changed with the recent coronavirus pandemic, the hospitality industry has slowed down due to travel bans and stay-at-home-order resulting in less demand for hotel rooms. Resulting in less work hours and more free time. Therefore, I have no more excuses for myself for not taking the coding class I always wanted.

I decided to challenge myself to learn a new skill set and sign-up with Flatiron. The Flatiron Software Engineer program was recommended to me from a close friend. The curriculum was very in-depth, comparing to another boot-camp program I found online. So, my journey has begun on January 11th. I am still scared at the same time excited, but I know I will be fine and will do my best to finish this journey.
